This new-in-box hydrostatic transaxle is originally manufactured to fit Sears, Craftsman, Poulan, Husqvarna, and Weed-Eater brand front-engine lawn tractors and riding mowers. It has a 4-1/4"-diameter input pulley mounted under the 8-1/2"-diameter cooling fan, with the pulley centerline 4-7/8" above the case-seam centerline. The speed-control lever is on the right side; the brake is on top of the left-front corner, and the bypass controls are at the top-front, just to the right of center. It has 1"-diameter axle shafts that extend out from the case 4-5/8" on each side; the axles have 1/4" x 2-3/8" keyways with snap-ring grooves on the axle ends. The overall end-to-end axle length is approximately 29-1/8". The case has two sets of industry-standard mounting holes -- the close-together holes are on 13" side-to-side centers x 1-3/4" front-to-back centers; the far-apart mount holes are on 16-1/4" x 2-1/2" centers.
MOUNTING NOTE: Make sure you have the front supports securely fastened to the transaxle or misalignment will occur, causing non-warrantable problems.
DRIVE-LINKAGE NOTE: These transaxles are made to be used with the foot-operated F-N-R pedal controls. They will not work as-is with hand-operated fender-mount shifters. I am working on a conversion to make this transaxle compatible with hand-shift mowers.
K46 REPLACEMENT NOTE for HUSQVARNA/ Sears/Craftsman: I have customers who used this K66Y to replace K46 transaxles in their Husqvarna or Husqvarna-made riders with the foot-pedal F-N-R controls.
If you want to use this K66Y transaxle to upgrade your Husqvarna riding mower/lawn tractor that originally had a K46, there are four Conversion Upgrade Kits available. Which Kit you require will depend on your rear tire size and whether your rear wheels have the hubs welded to the wheels or have demountable 5-lug wheels. It will also depend on your mower Model Number. For Sears/Craftsman mowers, it is the 917.xxxxxx number on the label under the seat (e.g. 917.288561); for Husqvarna mowers, it will be letters and numbers (e.g. LGT2654, YTH22V46, etc.) and the Product and Maintenance Level Numbers from the under-seat label (e.g. 96 0450041 00). I will need all this information to determine which Kit you need. The transaxle Serial Number from the transaxle label will also be helpful, e.g. 46BT0873421.
Conversion Upgrade Kit 1 is a 30-piece Kit for riders with the 5-lug demountable wheels. It sells for $264.00. With this Kit, you re-use your original tires, wheels and lug bolts.
Conversion Upgrade Kits 2, 3, and 4 are 26-piece Kits for riders with the wheels welded to the hubs. These Kits have 4-lug hubs and wheels. The Kit differences are in the replacement wheel width, with the wheel width depending on your tire size. I will need to know your tire size to determine which is the correct Kit for you. Kit 2 costs $265.00; Kit 3 costs $270.00, and Kit 4 costs $285.00.
All Kits include detailed instructions and pictures.
Also note that this upgrade is NOT a bolt-in replacement -- besides the Conversion Upgrade Kit, it will require some hand tools, maybe some power tools, good mechanical aptitude, and patience. But once finished, you will have a superior mower!
K66C REPLACEMENT NOTE for JOHN DEERE: I have another customer who used this K66Y to replace a K66C in his Deere rider with the foot-pedal F-N-R controls. I can sell you a set of Copyrighted instructions on how to do this for $100.00. If, after reading the instructions, you decide to buy a K66Y from me, I will deduct the $100.00 from the transaxle price. This is also not a direct bolt-in replacement, but it does not require the amount of effort that the Husqvarna K46 Upgrade does, since you're already replacing another K66.
This is an 'A'-Input transaxle -- it mounts in the mower with the input pulley, shift arm and brake AHEAD OF the axle. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THIS TRANSAXLE on any rider where the transaxle is mounted with the input pulley, brake and shift arm BEHIND the axle, as it is not engineered for this mode of operation.
QUESTIONS? Please -- if you are attempting to use this transaxle to replace a different transaxle -- before you ask a "Will-it-fit?" question, compare the measurements of your transaxle to the dimensions I have listed above for this transaxle, and note the Model and Serial Numbers off your current transaxle. Yes, that may require safely jacking up your mower, removing a wheel, then crawling under the mower with a scale, tape measure, flashlight and notepad, as well as a rag to carefully clean off dirt and grease. In your question, also include the Model and Serial Number off the mower. Thanks!
