This in-line-shift, gear-drive, new-in-box 5-speed replacement Model 820-001B Peerless transaxle is a bolt-in replacement for Murray front-engine riding mowers and other Murray-built front-engine riders using either an 820-001, 820-001A or 820-001B transaxle.
This transaxle is almost identical to the 820-028, 028A and 028B used on other Murray riders -- 5-speed with the same Forward gear ratios, short 5/8"-diameter input shaft, and short shift shaft -- except the 001 brake lever is different and the 001 axles are 7/8" longer on each side than the 028 axles. Reverse ratio is slightly faster -- 1.40:1 on the 001 vs 2.00:1 on the 028. As for the brake lever, all Peerless brake levers interchange, so if you want, you can take the one off the 001 and put your old 028 lever in its place...or...let me know when you order, and I can install the correct lever at no extra charge before I ship it.
This transaxle has a 5/8"-diameter x 1-1/16" tall input shaft with keyway and snap-ring groove. (A new woodruff key and snap ring are included.) It has the 1/2"-diameter x 7/8"-tall, square-end shift shaft as shown. It has 1"-diameter axle shafts with keyways and snap-ring grooves on the ends; the overall end-to-end axle length is 29"; the axle ends extend out from the case approximately 4-3/4" on each side.
This transaxle has two sets of industry-standard mounting holes: The close-together holes are on 13" side-to-side centers x 1-3/4" front-to-back centers; the far-apart mount holes are on 16-1/4" x 2-1/2" centers.
MOUNTING NOTE: The front-support brace holes on the lower-front corners of the transaxle are not threaded, since the mower manufacturer uses 5/16"-18 self-threading bolts to hold the front supports to these corners. If you are re-using your original bolts or equivalent OEM bolts, make sure they have clean threads when re-installing these supports. If you do not have the original-style bolts and are using standard machine-thread bolts for these front-corner supports, you will need to carefully tap these holes to match the threads of your bolts. WARNING: If you plan on pre-tapping these holes, the case material is only about 0.060" (1/16") thick at the back of these holes, so measure the hole depth and set your tap accordingly, or you will break through the case into the gear-lube area.
For the technically-minded bidder, the Forward-shift gear ratios are: 1st) 4.55:1; 2nd) 1.50:1; 3rd) 1:00:1; 4th) 0.79:1; and 5th) 0.61:1. Input pinion ratio is 2.54:1, final-drive/differential ratio is 8.02:1, and Reverse is 1.40:1.

This transaxle is designed for use on a standard front-engine riding mower/lawn tractor. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THIS TRANSAXLE AS-IS ON A REAR-ENGINE RIDER (where the transaxle is mounted with the input pulley, brake and shift arm BEHIND the axle) or you will have 1 forward speed and 5 reverse speeds.
WHEEL NOTE: For those who want to upgrade their mower and use this heavy-duty transaxle on a standard Murray rider that originally had 3/4" axles, please contact me -- I can supply wheels and hubs with 1" axle bores (see my other listings).
MOWER RACING NOTE: The 820-Series Peerless transaxle is the heaviest-duty gear-drive transaxle available for vertical-shaft engine applications, which is why mower-racing competitors use this transaxle. Yes, that may require safely jacking up your mower, removing a wheel, then crawling under the mower with a scale, tape measure, flashlight and notepad, as well as a rag to carefully clean off dirt and grease. Being new, this transaxle is covered by the Peerless 2-year Consumer Use/90-day Commercial Use/30-day Rental Use Limited Warranty within the USA and the 1-year Consumer/90-day Commercial/30-day Rental Limited Warranty outside the USA. NOTE: There is NO warranty if this transaxle is used for competition purposes! A dated receipt will be provided to validate the warranty, dated to reflect its arrival at your place so you won't lose warranty coverage for travel time. Note that the warranty covers defects in material and workmanship -- it is not a blanket guarantee against abuse and mistreatment. A copy of the Peerless Warranty will also be included with the transaxle.
